Loved You A Little - The Maine, Taking Back Sunday, Charlotte Sands

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

When this song came out I completely fan girled out hard. A collaboration like this shook me to the core. I was 100% instantly invested, so I might be a little bias.

To it’s core it is an emo anthem through and through.

The first big draw for me was Taking Back Sunday, who will always be in my top three bands of all time, hands down, no argument, set it in stone. I was raised on Adam Lazzara's voice, I find it very hard to see failure in anything he does.

I listened to The Maine a lot back in 2009, but have not heard any of their newer stuff, so it was a little bit of a blast from the past hearing John O'Callaghan champion the role of main vocals.

This was my first exposure to Charlotte and I loved every second of it, you more than likely see more from her here in this series. To me, she is Hayley Williams reincarnated. She makes me feel the same way I did when I watched the "Misery Business" video on repeat in 2007. I wanted to be Hayley more than anything in the world. I even tried, key word here is TRIED, to dye my hair like hers, it was a disaster... Charolette was able to make me feel that way again. Admittedly, we already have the same hair color (teal), which I thought was serendipitous.

The song starts subtle, soft... without the lyrics the melody alone seems almost subdued. Charlotte provided the intro lyrics and when you least expect it John comes in for the first time, "bit by bit" as the beat drops and the true shape of the song becomes visible.

“If I was just a lie to you,

Well, you were less than that to me,

Never loved you a little”

This banger has the classic layering that Taking Back Sunday is known for. The constant back and forth between John and Adam plays out like a game of chess. When Charolette is featured it completely changes the game. Turning this two-man game into a trio. instead of trying to think of a three-person game to replace chess with I am envisioning John and Adam playing this very intense game of chess when Charolette interrupts and is like, "hey, what the fuck is up, you guys need to figure this out". She helps amplify the stress and chaos of the situation. Having Charolette on the track really helps me, as a woman, connect more to the song and its meaning. I definetly think if there wasn't a female voice on the track I would have had a harder time connecting to the meaning,.

There is creative wordplay with lie/lay. Throughout the song, “lie” is used to mean both untruth and "lie" as in lay, as in “getting laid”. It goes on to talk about how this idea of love was built up in the persons head. When it was meaningless.

“Tell me who you were falling for

When we were lying on the floor”

1,000% a masterpiece. Again, I know I am bias, but every time I Listen to this song I get goosebumps. I legit don't want to publish this post because I feel like I'm going to think of something else or that I'm missing something... well here goes nothing.

Tattoo-able Lyric: “If I’m the fool, then what are you?”

Full Lyrics:

If I was just a lie to you

Well you were less than that to me

Never loved you a little

Bit by bit

You built this all in your head

And you knew goddamn well

Lays like these

They lean miss more than swing

And what made you think that

What we had was love not

Meaningless and

If I'm the fool

What's that make you?

Don't tell me why

(Don't tell me)

You can't sleep at night

(You can't sleep)

I know now I won't answer

(I know now, I know now)

(I won't ever do this again)

If I was just a lie to you

Well you were less than that to me

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little

Tell me who you were falling for

When we were lying on the floor

Never loved you a little

Try not to think of me at all

When you're lonely and exposed

All I really know is

Tales like these

Tragically end badly

Blame me, either way

I was too far gone to say

I'm tired it's a little too late

If I'm the fool

Then what are you

Don't tell me why

(Don't tell me)

You can't sleep at night

(You can't sleep)

I know now I won't answer

(I know now, I know now)

(I won't ever do this again)

If I was just a lie to you

Well you were less than that to me

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little

Tell me who you were falling for

When we were lying on the floor

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little

(If I'm a fool what does that make you?)

I never loved you at all

At all

At all (Loved you a little)

And what made you think that

What we had was love

And if I was the fool

Then what does that make you?

What made you think that

What we had was love

And if I was the fool

Then what does that make you?

And what made you think that

What we had was love

And if I was the fool

Then what does that make you?

What made you think that

(If I was just a lie to you)

What we had was love

(Well you were less than that to me)

And if I was the fool then

(Never loved you a little)

What does that make you?

Loved you a little

Tell me who you were falling for

When we were lying on the floor

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little

If I was just a lie to you

Well you were less than that to me

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little

Tell me who you were falling for

When we were lying on the floor

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little

Never loved you a little

Loved you a little
